Who We Are
The Hinksey Review is an independent academic publication dedicated to applied research in business, economics, policy, technology, and related fields.
We publish rigorous work by young scholars whose research demonstrates clarity of thought, strength of evidence, and seriousness of analysis. Our editorial standard is grounded in the quality of the work itself, while recognising that strong research can emerge from many different educational backgrounds and stages of academic development.
We are selective by design. Our aim is not volume, but work that contributes meaningfully to real intellectual and practical questions. Research published in the Review should be able to stand comfortably within a serious academic or professional setting.
The Hinksey Review is an open-access publication. All articles are freely accessible online and are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0). Authors retain copyright of their work while granting the Review a non-exclusive right to publish and distribute it.
Our Mission
The Hinksey Review was founded on a simple conviction: intellectual seriousness is not determined by age, title, or institutional position.
Important ideas often emerge early, particularly in periods of rapid technological and social change, when established assumptions are being reconsidered and new tools place advanced forms of research and analysis within wider reach. In an age shaped by artificial intelligence, global connectivity, and unprecedented access to information, younger researchers are increasingly able to engage with complex questions independently and at a far earlier stage than previous generations.
Yet despite this shift, meaningful editorial spaces for rigorous young scholarship remain rare. The Hinksey Review exists to provide that environment: a publication where ambitious emerging researchers can pursue serious inquiry and develop original analysis.
Applied, Not Theoretical
We are explicitly an applied publication. Our focus is on research grounded in real markets, real systems, and real decisions. The measure of strong applied research is not merely whether it is internally coherent, but whether it produces insights that practitioners, policymakers, and organisations can meaningfully act upon.
Strategy, Markets & Organisations
We seek research that examines how businesses actually operate, compete, and adapt. Work in this area is grounded in empirical observation, case evidence, or structured economic reasoning.
Policy, Institutions & Public Decision-Making
We publish work that takes the machinery of government, regulation, and public institutions seriously: research grounded in how policy is actually designed, contested, and implemented.
Markets, Brands & the Practice of Marketing
We treat marketing as a discipline of measurable consequence: pricing, positioning, distribution, and the long-term economics of brand and customer relationships.
Human Behaviour & Decision Science
We seek empirical work on how individuals and groups actually decide, judge, and act under uncertainty, social pressure, and incomplete information.
AI Applications, Ethics & Impact
We publish work that engages seriously with artificial intelligence as a force shaping industry, society, and human decision-making. Theoretical AI research is outside our scope; applied consequence is not.
Society, Inequality & Social Impact
We publish research on the structural forces shaping modern societies: labour, mobility, demography, and the distributional consequences of economic and technological change.

Submit WorkOur name is inspired by Hinksey, a quiet hamlet just south of Oxford, overlooking the meadows once walked by Matthew Arnold in . In his poem, Arnold tells of a scholar drawn by curiosity into a wider search for knowledge, one shaped not only by formal study, but by independence, reflection, and intellectual courage.
That spirit continues to guide The Hinksey Review and Hinksey Labs: a belief that young scholars should encounter serious ideas early, pursue questions that matter to them, and discover that careful research can contribute meaningfully to intellectual and practical challenges.
