Terms of Use

2. Eligibility to Submit

The Hinksey Review accepts submissions from:

• upper secondary school students;
• undergraduate students; and
• independent researchers under the age of 25.

We may, at our discretion, consider submissions outside these categories where appropriate.

If you are under 18, you must have the consent of a parent or legal guardian to submit work to the Review, participate in peer review, provide personal information, and agree to these Terms. By submitting work, you confirm that you have obtained any required consent.

Authors are responsible for ensuring that any listed school, university, employer, organisation, or other affiliation is accurate and may be used in connection with the submission or publication. We may ask authors to verify their identity, age, affiliation, or eligibility at any stage.

3. Scope of the Review

The Hinksey Review publishes original research articles: formal, structured, analytical works of applied research that investigate consequential questions in business, economics, policy, technology, society, and related fields.

We do not generally publish literature reviews, textbook summaries, opinion pieces, or restatements of established positions. Submissions should make a genuine intellectual contribution, such as a new argument, new analysis, new application of existing theory, new dataset, or focused investigation of a real-world problem.

All submissions must comply with the Review's published submission requirements, including requirements relating to language, length, formatting, citations, file type, anonymity, author information, and subject area.

We may update our scope, editorial categories, submission requirements, and publication format from time to time.

4. Submission Requirements

By submitting work to The Hinksey Review, you confirm that:

• the submission is your original work, except for properly cited third-party material;
• all listed authors have made a meaningful contribution to the work and have approved the submission;
• the submission does not infringe any copyright, trade mark, privacy, confidentiality, data protection, contractual, or other rights of any third party;
• all sources, data, quotations, ideas, images, charts, figures, and third-party materials are properly acknowledged and lawfully used;
• the research, analysis, citations, data, and conclusions are accurate to the best of your knowledge;
• you have disclosed any prior publication, republication, preprint, online posting, competition submission, institutional repository posting, or substantially similar version of the work;
• you have disclosed any conflicts of interest that could reasonably be perceived to influence the research or its presentation;
• you have disclosed any use of artificial intelligence tools as required by our Research Principles and submission instructions; and
• you have complied with all applicable laws, ethical obligations, institutional requirements, and consent requirements.

Prior publication does not automatically disqualify a submission. However, authors must clearly disclose whether the work, or a substantially similar version of it, has previously appeared elsewhere, including in a school journal, online platform, competition, institutional repository, personal website, preprint server, or other publication. We reserve the right to determine whether republication is appropriate.

Authors are allowed to submit their work elsewhere. However, authors are responsible for ensuring that submission to The Hinksey Review does not breach any agreement, policy, publication rule, exclusivity requirement, or copyright arrangement with another publication, institution, competition, or platform.

5. Research Principles and Academic Integrity

All submissions, authors, reviewers, editors, and contributors must comply with The Hinksey Review Research Principles.

We take academic integrity seriously. Plagiarism, fabricated or falsified data, misrepresented sources, fabricated citations, undisclosed conflicts of interest, misleading authorship, unethical research practices, and concealment of substantial AI usage may result in rejection, disqualification, correction, removal, or retraction.

Authors should retain sufficient records of their research process, sources, data, methodology, and analysis to support the claims made in their submission. We may request additional information, source material, data, or explanation where needed to assess integrity, accuracy, originality, or compliance with our policies.

6. Use of Artificial Intelligence

The Hinksey Review permits the responsible use of AI tools as part of the research and writing process, subject to the Review's Research Principles and submission instructions.

AI tools may not be used as a substitute for the author's own intellectual contribution. Authors remain fully responsible for every claim, data point, source, method, citation, and argumentative move in their work. Authors must be able to explain, verify, and defend the content of their submission.

All submissions must include an AI usage disclosure where required. Concealment of substantial AI usage, reliance on fabricated AI-generated citations, or submission of work substantively generated by AI without meaningful author direction, verification, and transformation may result in rejection, disqualification, correction, removal, or retraction.

7. Review Process

Submissions may be reviewed through one or more stages, including initial screening, AI-assisted integrity checks, plagiarism checks, double-blind peer review, editorial review, revision requests, and final editorial decision.

By submitting work to The Hinksey Review, you acknowledge and agree that:

• your submission may be screened using AI-assisted tools, plagiarism detection tools, citation checks, and other review methods;
• passing an initial screening or peer review stage does not guarantee acceptance for publication;
• reviewers, editors, or members of the Review Board may request revisions, clarifications, source checks, or further information;
• editorial decisions are based on originality, rigour, relevance, evidence, suitability, integrity, and editorial judgment;
• final editorial decisions are at the discretion of The Hinksey Review; and
• we are not required to provide detailed reasons, feedback, or reconsideration for every decision.

We aim to operate a fair and serious review process, but we do not guarantee any particular timeline, outcome, reviewer assignment, level of feedback, issue placement, indexing status, citation result, academic recognition, or other benefit.

8. Peer Review Participation and Confidentiality

As part of the Review's peer review model, submitting authors may be asked to review up to two anonymised manuscripts submitted by other contributors, usually in the same or a related publication area.

If you participate as a reviewer, you agree to:

• treat all manuscripts, review materials, reviewer instructions, editorial communications, and related information as confidential;
• not share, copy, distribute, publish, identify, or attempt to identify anonymised manuscripts or authors;
• not use unpublished ideas, data, arguments, methods, or materials from manuscripts under review for your own benefit or for the benefit of any third party;
• provide honest, respectful, constructive, and good-faith feedback;
• disclose any conflict of interest; and
• comply with the Review's Peer Review Guidelines.

We may disregard reviews, remove reviewers from the process, reject submissions, or take other action where peer review obligations are breached.

9. Editorial Discretion

The Hinksey Review reserves broad editorial discretion. We may reject, decline to review, request revisions to, delay, edit, correct, withdraw, remove, or retract any submission or published work where we consider it appropriate.

This may include, without limitation, cases involving quality concerns, scope concerns, plagiarism, authorship issues, AI misuse, fabricated or unreliable sources, data integrity concerns, ethical concerns, legal risk, reputational risk, technical issues, formatting problems, breach of these Terms, breach of our Research Principles, or incompatibility with the Review's editorial standards.

We may also make minor editorial, typographical, formatting, metadata, layout, citation, or style corrections to accepted work before or after publication, provided such changes do not materially alter the author's argument without consultation.

10. Corrections, Clarifications, and Retractions

If a significant error, omission, ethical issue, rights issue, or integrity concern is identified after publication, we may take appropriate action, including issuing a correction, clarification, expression of concern, removal notice, or retraction.

Authors must promptly notify us if they become aware of a material error, rights issue, ethical concern, or other problem affecting their submitted or published work.

11. Fees

11.1 Submission Fees

The Hinksey Review does not currently charge a submission fee.

We may introduce, amend, waive, or remove submission fees in the future. Any applicable submission fee will be disclosed before submission. Unless expressly stated otherwise, payment of a submission fee does not guarantee review, acceptance, publication, feedback, or any particular editorial outcome.

11.2 Publication Fees

The Hinksey Review does not currently charge a publication fee or article processing charge.

We may introduce, amend, waive, or remove publication fees in the future. Any applicable publication fee will be disclosed before authors are required to pay it. Unless expressly stated otherwise, payment of a publication fee does not affect editorial judgment and does not guarantee publication, indexing, readership, citation, academic recognition, or any other outcome.

11.3 Fee Changes

Any future fees may vary by submission type, author category, issue, programme, region, promotional arrangement, scholarship, waiver, or other factor at our discretion. We may offer fee waivers or discounts where appropriate.

12. Author Copyright and Publication Licence

Authors retain copyright in their submitted and published work, subject to any rights granted to The Hinksey Review and any applicable Creative Commons licence.

By submitting work to The Hinksey Review, you grant Hinksey Labs, Ltd. and The Hinksey Review a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive licence to receive, store, copy, format, screen, review, anonymise, transmit to reviewers and editors, reproduce, display, archive, and otherwise use the submission for purposes connected with operating the Review, conducting peer review, making editorial decisions, maintaining records, and administering publication.

If your work is accepted for publication, you grant Hinksey Labs, Ltd. and The Hinksey Review a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive, perpetual licence to publish, reproduce, distribute, display, communicate, archive, index, preserve, promote, and make available the work in any format or medium, including on our website, in digital issues, in archives, in databases, in promotional materials, and through third-party platforms or indexing services.

This licence allows us to keep the work available as part of the scholarly and public record, even if you later publish the work elsewhere or request account deletion, subject to applicable law and our correction, removal, and retraction policies.

13. Open Access and Copyright Policy

The Hinksey Review is an open-access publication. Articles accepted and published by the Review are made freely available online.

Unless otherwise stated at the point of publication, published articles are made available under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Licence (CC BY 4.0). Authors retain copyright in their work while granting the Review the rights needed to publish, preserve, distribute, and promote the work.

Further details about author copyright, publication rights, Creative Commons licensing, republication, attribution, and third-party use are set out in our separate Copyright Policy. If there is any conflict between this section and the Copyright Policy regarding copyright or licensing, the Copyright Policy will apply, unless these Terms expressly state otherwise.

14. Third-Party Materials, Permissions, and Data

Authors are responsible for obtaining any permissions, licences, consents, ethics approvals, or rights needed for third-party content included in a submission, including images, figures, charts, tables, datasets, interview materials, survey responses, logos, trade marks, screenshots, maps, and copyrighted text.

Authors must not submit confidential, private, unlawfully obtained, or restricted information unless they have a lawful basis and all necessary permissions to do so. Authors are responsible for anonymising or protecting personal data where required.

If a submission contains third-party material that cannot lawfully be published under the applicable open-access licence, authors must disclose this clearly during submission and identify any required restrictions, credits, or permissions.

15. Author Information, Names, Bios, and Publicity

As part of the submission and publication process, authors may be asked to provide names, affiliations, locations, short biographies, contact information, and other publication metadata.

If your work is accepted, you grant us permission to publish your name, author information, affiliation, location, biography, paper title, abstract, keywords, and related metadata in connection with the article, issue, website, archive, promotional materials, and publication records.

We may refer to published articles, author names, article titles, abstracts, excerpts, issue participation, awards, or achievements in our communications, website, social media, newsletters, reports, and promotional materials, with appropriate credit where practicable. We will not knowingly publish sensitive personal information beyond what is reasonably connected to the publication without appropriate consent.

Where a work has more than one author, the submitting author warrants that they are authorised to provide each listed author's information and to give the permissions in this section on their behalf.

If you are under 18, or if any listed co-author is under 18, parent or guardian consent is required before that author's information is submitted for publication.

16. Website Content and Review Materials

All website content, branding, design, logos, submission guidance, editorial materials, peer review guidelines, research principles, templates, issue layouts, and other materials provided by or through The Hinksey Review are owned by Hinksey Labs, Ltd. or its licensors, unless otherwise stated.

You may access and use these materials for personal, educational, research, or submission-related purposes only. You may not copy, reproduce, distribute, modify, sell, misrepresent, or use our branding, website materials, editorial materials, or platform content without prior written permission, except where allowed by law or by an applicable licence.

17. User Conduct

You agree not to:

• submit unlawful, defamatory, abusive, discriminatory, harassing, obscene, misleading, fraudulent, plagiarised, infringing, or otherwise inappropriate content;
• impersonate another person or misrepresent your identity, age, affiliation, authorship, qualifications, or authority;
• interfere with the operation, security, integrity, or availability of our website, submission system, or review process;
• introduce malware, attempt unauthorised access, scrape content unlawfully, or misuse automated tools;
• harass, intimidate, or abuse authors, reviewers, editors, staff, or other contributors;
• manipulate or attempt to manipulate the review process; or
• use The Hinksey Review name, brand, platform, or publication status in a misleading way.

We may suspend access, reject submissions, remove content, or take other action where these rules are breached.

18. No Guarantee of Outcomes

Publication in, submission to, or participation with The Hinksey Review does not guarantee admission to any educational programme, university, scholarship, internship, employment opportunity, prize, award, academic recognition, citation, indexing, readership, professional outcome, or endorsement by Hinksey Labs, Ltd. or any third party.

The Review is provided for academic, educational, editorial, and informational purposes. Nothing on the Review website or in our publications constitutes legal, financial, investment, medical, academic admissions, policy, or other professional advice.

19. Third-Party Links, Platforms, and Services

The Review may link to or rely on third-party websites, tools, platforms, databases, forms, payment processors, plagiarism detection tools, AI-assisted screening tools, indexing services, repositories, or other services.

We are not responsible for the content, availability, accuracy, security, practices, or policies of third-party websites or services. You access or use third-party services at your own risk and subject to their own terms and policies.

References to third-party organisations, authors, publications, universities, companies, products, services, or datasets do not constitute endorsement by The Hinksey Review or Hinksey Labs, Ltd.

20. Privacy and Data Protection

We process personal data in accordance with our separate Privacy Policy and applicable data protection laws.

By using the Review, submitting work, participating in peer review, or communicating with us, you acknowledge that we may collect and process personal information such as names, contact details, author biographies, affiliations, locations, submission materials, reviewer comments, editorial communications, and technical information.

Further details about what personal data we collect, how we use it, how long we retain it, when we share it, international transfers, and your rights are set out in our Privacy Policy.

21. Availability and Changes to the Review

We may modify, suspend, discontinue, restructure, rename, or limit any part of The Hinksey Review, including submission windows, issue dates, publication areas, review processes, website features, eligibility categories, fees, open-access arrangements, and editorial policies.

We aim to maintain accurate and accessible information, but we do not guarantee that the website, submission system, archives, or published materials will always be uninterrupted, error-free, secure, up-to-date, or available.

22. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Hinksey Labs, Ltd., The Hinksey Review, and their directors, officers, employees, contractors, editors, reviewers, advisors, partners, and affiliates will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential, special, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, opportunities, reputation, goodwill, data, submissions, publications, or business arising out of or in connection with your use of the Review, submission of work, participation in peer review, publication or non-publication, reliance on Review content, or inability to access the Review.

We do not exclude or limit liability where it would be unlawful to do so.

23. Indemnity

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Hinksey Labs, Ltd., The Hinksey Review, and their directors, officers, employees, contractors, editors, reviewers, advisors, partners, and affiliates from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, costs, and expenses, including reasonable legal fees, arising out of or connected with:

• your submission or published work;
• your breach of these Terms or any Review policy;
• your infringement or alleged infringement of third-party rights;
• your misuse of the Review, website, submission system, peer review process, or published materials;
• your violation of applicable law; or
• any inaccurate, misleading, unlawful, unethical, or unauthorised material you provide.

24. Governing Law and Dispute Resolution

These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales.

If a dispute arises, the parties should first attempt to resolve it informally and in good faith. Either party may begin this process by sending written notice describing the issue. The parties should allow at least 60 days for good-faith discussions unless both sides agree to end the process earlier.

If the dispute is not resolved through informal discussions, it will be resolved through binding arbitration, unless a court process is required by law or the matter involves urgent injunctive relief, intellectual property enforcement, data protection rights, or another issue unsuitable for arbitration.

Arbitration will be conducted in English. For smaller claims, we may use an online or low-cost arbitration provider where available and appropriate. For larger or more complex claims, we may use a recognised arbitration service such as the London Court of International Arbitration or another provider agreed by the parties.

Nothing in this section prevents us from seeking urgent court relief to protect intellectual property, confidential information, publication integrity, personal safety, or the security and operation of the Review.

25. Severability

If any provision of these Terms is found to be invalid, unlawful, or unenforceable, the remaining provisions will remain in full force and effect.

26. Entire Agreement

These Terms, together with any policies or guidelines incorporated by reference, constitute the entire agreement between you and Hinksey Labs, Ltd. regarding your use of The Hinksey Review, submission of work, participation in peer review, and related services.

27. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. When we make changes, we will post the updated version on our website and revise the "Last Updated" date.

Your continued use of the Review, submission of work, participation in peer review, or use of our website after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
